What to Expect Before and After Your Nose Surgery

One of the most common plastic surgeries done each year is rhinoplasty or a nose job. This procedure is performed on individuals who want to improve the size, shape, and contours of their nose. Sometimes, it might be done on people with certain sinus problems to help them breathe better. If you are considering a rhinoplasty, it’s important to know what to expect both before and after the surgery.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that should only be done on adults. Teens and younger are not good candidates as their face and nose will continue to change as they age. However, there can be exceptions. Children who have a cleft palate or other facial birth defects are considered good candidates for rhinoplasty. Of course, anyone who wants the procedure done should also be in good general health to have a safe surgery.

Before Rhinoplasty

Before your rhinoplasty surgery, your surgeon will be able to answer any questions to have and prepare you for surgery and recovery. They may do this by showing you results from previous patients who have similar facial features to yours. It is important that you are open and honest about the results that you expect.

What to Expect

On average, rhinoplasty surgery takes around an hour and a half to three hours to complete. It is performed on an outpatient basis. So you will be able to return home the same day to begin recovery. There are two types of surgical techniques: closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. Closed is when the incisions are made inside the nostrils, whereas open means the incision is made between and inside the nostrils.

In some cases, cartilage may be needed to change the appearance of the nose. This is usually taken from the septum, or in the case of a revision procedure, it can be taken from the ear or rib.

After Rhinoplasty

After a rhinoplasty procedure, there may be discomfort or swelling that is mild or moderate. You may receive medication to control the discomfort. A splint is applied to the outside and inside of the nose to allow it to heal. This should remain in place for around one week and you should avoid performing any strenuous activities for two to three weeks.

You will need to make sure to protect your nose during this time as it is healing. This means that you should sleep with your head elevated, avoid sneezing, avoid touching the nose, and avoid putting any pressure on your nose. Most of the swelling and bruising will go down within two weeks. However, there will be residual swelling for a few months post-op. You will notice immediate results once your splint is removed but it can take up to a year to see the full results.
