6 Things You Should Do For Your Tummy Tuck Scars

Although it can be an exciting time as you wait for your tummy tuck results to emerge, it’s important to remember that scarring will be inevitable, even with an experienced plastic surgeon. However, there are some steps you can take to ensure your scars successfully fade and leave your skin clear. Here are some things to keep in mind as you plan your tummy tuck recovery.

1. Research your plastic surgeon

One of the first things you should always do is to select the right plastic surgeon. Doing so can be the difference between a minor scar and a major scar. You should make sure your plastic surgeon is board-certified and specializes in tummy tuck surgery. Additionally, look at the before-and-after photos of tummy tuck surgeries they have performed in the past and pay special attention to scarring.

2. Follow aftercare instructions

One of the most important things you’ll need to do is follow your aftercare instructions given by your plastic surgeon. The guidelines you’ll be given on proper hygiene and how to care for your incisions after surgery will help your skin heal with better results. If you do not give the right attention to your incisions, you will increase the chance that you will experience scarring.

3. Monitor for signs of infection

Be sure to always keep your incision area clean and well taken care of. Don’t neglect it. Be sure that you monitor the incision area daily for any signs of infection. If at any point during your aftercare you suspect your incision has become infected, let your plastic surgeon know immediately. An infected incision can result in visible scarring — or, in a worst case scenario, it can become deadly.

4. Keep your skin moisturized

After your incisions have fully closed, you should begin moisturizing the area regularly. Make sure your moisturizer contains Vitamin E, which can help reduce the chance of scarring. Scarring often results from dry skin, so make sure you don’t skimp on this step!

5. Avoid sunlight

Sunlight can cause unwanted pigmentation as your incisions heal, so it’s important to keep it covered and wear a broad spectrum sunscreen for at least one year after surgery. Additionally, you should avoid tanning at all costs.

6. Avoid irritation

After your tummy tuck, you should consider only using products that are gentle on your skin, especially near your scar area. You should also avoid any type of clothing or fabrics that can cause your skin irritation. Irritation can cause dryness and negatively affect your incisions’ healing progress.
